The first thing you should do when learning PHP and MySQL is to setup a local installation on your computer. This makes seeing your processed code instantly visible without the need to purchase server space and upload your files after every change.
When I began looking into PHP and MySQL all those years ago, there was a lot to learn in just setting it up. Luckily for you there are many applications available that make this task a lot simpler.
Everyone on the web seems to have their own list of what plugins to add to your Wordpress blog, so here are 5 that I recommend based on what I tend to install by default on all my new blogs.
Technically this is already included in the default Wordpress installation, but you’d be suprised how many people either don’t activate it or know how to. The way I got an Askimet API key was by signing up to a free blog at wordpress.com. This plugin is essential for fighting spam comments.

On Friday I managed to get my computer infected by the awful Vista Security Tool virus. When web browsing I use Firefox and am protected (apparently) by ESET anti-virus. Yet somehow, my computer was still compromised.
It began by closing all my windows and trying to run the console command prompt. Luckily, Windows Vista asked for my permission to run the program which I was able to decline, but the window for authorisation kept popping up instantly with no chance to do anything else. I was forced to hold the power button, shutting down my computer, and booting up again in safe mode (with network connections disabled), checking for a solution on my Dad’s PC.
In day-to-day life and browsing the Internet I often stumble across things where I think “damn that’s useful” or “I’m sure this might help someone”, so I finally decided to start my own blog to hopefully cover a lot of these situations.
This blog will mostly be focused on things I have overcome (or not) about website programming (PHP, jQuery, and more), web hosting, blogging, and other computer related things.
